Waxing FAQS
How does waxing work?
Wax is applied in the direction of the hair lies and then pulled off against the hair grain. It is intended to pull the hair out from the folicle(root of hair). The dead skin cells of the outer skin layer(called the epidermis) are removed, leaving you with smooth skin. Sometimes hairs may snap if they are very thin or brittle. We will discuss which technique will get you the best wax for your hair.
Why choose waxing over shaving?
Waxing is superior to shaving. The results last longer saving you on time and money, and your skin will also feel much smoother. Not only will your skin feel smoother as you won’t have coarse stubble at the base of your skin like after shaving but your dead skin cells are removed from the outer layer of the skin called the epidermis.
As the results of waxing last longer you only need to wax an area once every 3-6 weeks on average compared with every 2-4 days for shaving. With regular and consistent waxing the time in between each session can lengthen.
Which waxing technique is best?
We use both hot wax and strip wax.
Hot wax is applied evenly over the skin, when it has set, it is pulled off as a sheet. It is more effective than a strip wax for removing coarse and stubborn hair. It is generally less painful when removing coarse hair and therefore good for sensitive regions. Whereas a strip wax is applied to the skin using a roller.
Strip wax is more effective for fine hair, as it’s stickier and comes easily pulled off with a strip cloth. A strip wax is also quicker on average and many people find this makes any pain easier to manage.
Where does waxing hurt the most?
It varies from person to person but generally the top lip, or the brazilian region are the most sensitive.
Can waxing cause ingrown hair?
Ingrown hairs can occur with waxing. This is commonly due to clothes that rub and prevent the hair coming to the surface. Regular exfoliation is essential to help avoid this. We recommend you exfoliate 2-3 days before your appointment.
Can waxing reduce hair growth?
With regular and consistent waxing, hair can grow back finer over time, reducing the growth of the hair, although the hair itself does not stop growing back. The reduction in hair growth varies for each person. Waxing is not a substitute for permanent hair removal.
Is a brazilian wax painful?
It is usually not pleasant the first time, but with regular waxing, it becomes easier over time. It is best to trim your hair to 1-2cm before your wax and we can show you how to breathe, to help avoid pain while having a brazilian.
What should I do before getting a wax?
One week before
Shave one week before your treatment.
For intimate regions, trim the hair to around 1-2cm in length one week before your treatment.
2-3 days before until day of your wax
It is recommended to exfoliate the area to be waxed 2-3 days before your treatment. Keep your skin hydrated and moisturised, until the night before your wax.
On the day of your wax
On the day of your wax, make sure you shower and the area to be waxed is clean. Avoid applying moisturiser or any oils to the skin.
What should I do after getting a wax?
We recommend you shower a few hours after your appointment and moisturise after your waxing treatment. It is also recommended to exfoliate after waxing after your skin has calmed down from waxing but it’s advised to wait until your skin has calmed down(Approx 1-2 days) to do this.
What should I avoid before having a wax?
Limit sun exposure and any activities that will increase sensitivity of the area to be waxed 24 hours before your wax.
Don’t apply anything to your skin like moisturisers or deoderants on the day of your wax. Whilst exfoliation is recommended before waxing, please do this 2-3 days beforehand.
What should I avoid after having a wax?
To reduce the risk of irritation, discomfort, and infection, here are the general recommendations of what to avoid 24-48 hours following your waxing session:
Hot Water: This includes saunas and steam rooms. Heat opens up your pores, increasing the chance of skin irritation, redness, and infection.
Sun Exposure: Minimize your time in the sun after waxing.
Exfoliation: Exfoliating your skin can be harsh after waxing.
Harsh Chemicals: Limit yourself to using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Products with fragrances, alcohol, and other harsh chemicals may cause irritation.
Tight Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting clothing to prevent irritation in the waxed area.
Sweating: Avoid sweating and intense exercise to minimize skin irritation.
After our waxing treatments, we apply a refreshing tea tree soothing lotion for sanitization and calming.
If you have any skin concerns or questions, please let us know.
What should I do before getting a Brazilian wax?
Trim the hair to 1-2cm. Make sure the area is clean on the day. Wet sanitising wipes are provided for bikinis, hikinis and brazillian treatments.
How often is it recommended to wax?
Short answer: About every 3-6 weeks. Time between waxes can be increased with regular waxing.
Growth rates of hair vary for everyone based on many factors including: age, hormone levels, diet, medical conditions, stress levels and lifestyle factors, how often you wax, environment. Growth rates for hair also varies for different regions of the body.
There are three stages of hair growth: Anagen(Growth phase), catagen(Transition phase – Hair growth begins to stop), telogen(Rest stage – Hair growth has stopped and hair begins to fall out). Your hair can be in any of these growth stages at one time.
As up to a third of your hair can be in any stage of growth phase at any given time,it is best to wax every 3-6 weeks to allow enough time for new hairs to come through.
With regular waxing some people may experience finer hair regrowth over time, the amount of hair thinning varies depending on the person. For permanent hair removal we offer electrology and IPL.
Will my skin react to waxing?
Please advise us if you have sensitive skin or a particularly sensitive area, as we have methods that can avoid reactions.
Can I get a wax if I have psoarisis, dermatitis or eczema?
Unless the condition is severe, waxing can be helpful as it removes the dead surface skin cells, brining better skin texture.
